hi everyone this is mrs. Brad Byrne and today I’m going to be telling you about the first of the three AP language essays the synthesis essay and you’ll be working on this essay type all year long but it’s the first one we’ll start with I will put this video in your class notebook so you have access to it if you’d like to watch it later okay for a lot of students the synthesis essay looks very intimidating at first but once you get used to it at the end of the year it will probably feel like the easiest essay type and that’s because the synthesis is kind of like a miniature research paper where your sources are provided for you and research papers can be intimidating but by the end of the year you realize that with a synthesis a lot of the work is already done because you already have stuff to work with they’re giving you all the sources that you need and you just use what’s there so you don’t have to think up as much stuff when you’re doing the synthesis you basically just need to pick a side and then support it okay so first what is the synthesis essay first of all the synthesis is always question 1 and there are 40 minutes allotted for each of the three essays for a total of a hundred and twenty minutes which you can divide up however you’d like but the synthesis is always question one and it’s always preceded by a fifteen minute reading period which is actually before the 120 minute essay block starts so it’s recommended that you always start with the synthesis essay and get it out of the way and then if you’d prefer you can do the analysis and the argument essay in whichever order you’d like but always do the synthesis first and it’s good to know that you can actually start writing during the 15 minute reading period that time is set aside for you to look at the sources but if you want to actually start writing your essay during that time that’s fine also even though it’s called a synthesis essay remember that this is actually an argument essay with sources so even if the prompt doesn’t really look like an argument prompt it is a persuasive or an argument essay and you always need to pick aside when you’re writing a synthesis essay that means you need a clear really specific thesis statement with your position this year we’re going to talk about how there are usually only three ways of responding to an argument prompt whether it’s the synthesis or the open-ended argument and those are yes/no and okay but yes and no are basically you’re for it or against it thesis statements and you already know how to do those basically the idea is your position with your reasons so for yes I support this because of XY reasons or no I don’t support this because of that it’s not a good idea to actually put I or first-person in your thesis statement it’s better to stay in the third-person and just be very direct however you’re not banned from using the first-person point of view when you do write ap essays so it can be appropriate at times but not in your thesis statement the third option is qualified support and that’s the okay but this is the trickiest type of thesis statement however a lot of students do end up preferring to write this kind of an essay and it can be the most sophisticated argument the danger with okay but is that you seem to be wavering or you seen wishy-washy like I kind of support this but on the other hand I see some other reasons against it and if you do that then you won’t have a good score because it will just seem like you couldn’t make up your mind a good qualified support is going to be just more cific about what kinds of situations or what conditions would be in place for you to support that position so basically saying that something is a good idea only sometimes or in certain cases and you just have to be very clear about that and make sure that you stick to that position throughout the entire essay the worst thing you can do is seem to change your mind halfway through the essay you really need to pick a position and then stick with it the whole time okay so I mentioned that with the synthesis essay you already have your sources there a synthesis always comes with six sources that are labeled source a through F and they always give you sources that you can use no matter which argument side you take so they’ll give you sources that contain facts and evidence and arguments for both sides one source is always going to be a visual and that’s because one of the goals for AP language is that you learn to use visual texts or visual information in your arguments and interpret that you have to use three sources if you don’t use three sources you will not pass the synthesis essay the highest score you can get if you cite two sources would be a four which is not equivalent to passing you need to get at least a five to have like a c-minus type essay so you have to use three but unlike in your document based question for AP History there is no benefit to using more than three sources so it’s not recommended that you do that remember that time is of the essence you really don’t have time to read closely all six sources because that wouldn’t leave you enough time to write the essay you only have enough time to choose just three sources you’re going to use at that point you can stop looking at the at the sources you can write all over the sources as you read them but if you get to a point where you realize I’m really not going to use this source because I I don’t understand it or it’s a line graph and I really hate graphs so I know I’m not going to use this source then just don’t look at it anymore just flip to one of the other sources because you only have to use half of them in the synthesis essay you can directly quote the sources or you can paraphrase from them in the case of a visual you’re going to be explaining the visual it’s not actually required that you have direct quotes from the sources and the synthesis essay although you will have to do that in the rhetorical analysis essay but in any case you always need to cite anytime you’re taking from a source with parenthetical citations you’ll see that the cover page for the synthesis prompt basically gives you the the citations that you should use so you don’t have to figure it out but if you decide to use source a source B source e then just make all of your citations in that style or if you prefer to cite by using the author’s last name in parentheses then just be consistent with that don’t make a work cited because it’s not required and it’s just a waste of time okay so when it comes to building or organizing your argument these are the basics throughout the year you’ll learn about different ways to structure or organize an argument beyond the basic five paragraph structure that you’ve learned since middle school but the college board really wants you with the synthesis to put the sources and conversation with each other they always use that metaphor and it means that they don’t want you to look at the sources just in isolation but really use the sources and especially pull out certain strands from the sources that relate to each other so that you can build a coherent argument that means that the organization as far as your paragraphs is going to come from your argument not from the sources so each paragraph should start with an idea in the topic sentence or claim should lay that out it’s actually best to weave the sources together so you might use say source D and source F in the same paragraph you don’t want to have like a source a paragraph and then a source B paragraph and then a source C paragraph because then it just seems like you’re summarizing the sources and if you summarize the sources you will not get a good score you have to use the sources to support your argument and that means you’re going beyond summary you’re just pulling selectively from the sources and then really explaining them and elaborating on them one thing you should never do is cite something from a source if you aren’t sure that you understand what it means even though you all are really smart readers some of these sources are going to be pretty complicated and they might be about topics that you don’t have a lot of prior knowledge about so if you don’t understand something you really can’t hide that in your writing and it will lower your score if it seems like you’re using a source but you don’t really understand what it means or it doesn’t really support your argument remember that you can always use sources that you disagree with especially when you’re addressing the counter-argument and most high scoring AP essays will in some way address the counter-argument and kind of explain why the other side is wrong okay as an example I’m going to show you last year or 2018 synthesis prompt just so you can see what to expect this is the prompt it’s always question 1 and the prompt is always set up in the same way so the first part of the prompt gives you background you should not um rephrase or quote this background in your essay it’s just for your knowledge and in this case the prompt is asking you about eminent domain it says eminent domain is the power governments have to acquire property from private owners for public use the rationale behind eminent domain is that governments have greater legal authority over lands within their Dominion than do private owners eminent domain has been instituted in one way or another throughout the world for hundreds of years and they really need to say that because many AP students will have no idea what eminent domain means and they’ve never even heard of it before so if you do get a prompt and you don’t know anything about that topic don’t worry that’s actually quite common and they always give you the necessary background info so that you can still write about it and quickly take aside the next paragraph is really important because it is going to give you the actual prompt it’s kind of buried in there and you need to pay close attention to this paragraph even though it looks similar in every synthesis it has that key question that you need to answer buried in it so it always is going to say carefully read the following six sources including the introductory information for each source then synthesize material from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent well-developed essay that defends challenges or qualifies okay that part is the same in every prompt but here’s what you have to do defend challenge or qualify the notion that eminent domain is productive and beneficial whenever you find that prompt that’s really asking you or telling you what to do in your essay always make sure that you are highlight that or underlining it at the bare minimum and I actually suggest that you copy that down on the prompt it only takes a few seconds and it’s well worth the time to copy down in your own writing the actual prompt or the part of the prompt that’s telling you what to do because you are in a rush and it’s actually pretty common for students to write an essay that relates to the topic but doesn’t really do what the prompt was asking you to do okay the next part of the prompt is always the same again your argument should be the focus of your essay use the sources to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it avoid merely summarizing the sources indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from whether through direct quotation paraphrase or summary and then it tells you that you can cite them as source a source speed or using these descriptions so just use this as your guide when you’re citing the sources and remember that you must cite three of them okay so most of the sources are going to look like this one they’re going to give you the works cited entry at the top but you really will just be using the author’s last name or however it told you to cite that on the cover page or you can just cite it as source F you’re going to have sources from a variety of different publications and you can use any three that you’d like so as you read this you can just make notes quickly decide you know which argument will this support and go ahead and highlight or underline anything that you think you might use as a quote and you can write all over this okay here’s the visual source that was included in this packet and this time it was a cartoon rather than a photo or a chart so it says having defeated the wolf the three little pigs lose their house to a greater foe one is saying what the hell eminent domain and the other Pig is saying what the heck’s a Walmart if you understand the cartoon then definitely use it and talk about it if you can relate it to your argument but if you don’t understand the point then just skip it and use another source so if you were going to have a thesis statement about how eminent domain may sometimes be beneficial for a public interest but should never be used for the benefit of corporations or for private investment than you might be able to relate this Walmart cartoon which is suggesting that perhaps someone’s house or their private property was basically taken by the government where they were forced to sell it by the government for a corporation such as Walmart if you understand it then you can build that into your your argument ok so just a quick recap of your synthesis priorities the first priority is to understand the prompt really don’t skimp when you’re looking at that prompt and make sure that you copy out that sentence that’s telling you what you have to do make sure that you really read and study that background information whether or not you know anything about this topic and last year most students did not know anything about eminent domain but they were able to still finish the essay successfully because of that background next you want to pick a thesis statement and write a clear statement with reasons you might not be able to do this until after you look at the sources but make sure that once you pick a thesis statement you stick to it you don’t have time to change your mind at all next you’re going to sketch out a plan you do not have time to write out a rough draft but you can make a sketchy outline maybe on the page with the prompt so that you can just plan what your paragraphs are going to be about right a quick introduction if you can think of a really brilliant hook if you have an anecdote or a paradox or some kind of catchy thing from pop culture that you can relate to it then definitely use that as a hook if not you don’t have to have a really fool developed introduction so don’t spend a lot of time thinking of a brilliant hook I see a lot of essays where the writers spent a lot of time on the introduction came up with a great hook but then ran out of time when they were developing the argument later so if you know you can’t think of anything for a hook you can always leave some space at the top and then write in your thesis statement and then you can go back at the end to try to fill that in make sure that you use and cite three sources remember that’s a requirement just to get a five but it doesn’t do any good to use more than three make sure that you’re explaining and elaborating upon those sources the actual summary of the sources or the paraphrasing should only be a small percentage of your essay should not be the majority of your essay the majority should always be in your own words when it comes to the conclusion you just want to wrap it up you want to appear to finish you don’t have to have a really developed conclusion you would especially don’t have to just go back and restate all of your points that you’ve already said it’s a short essay they’ll remember what you said if you’re really short on time you can just kind of close it out at the end of a body paragraph but it’s always good to have a short conclusion just to say why this matters or try to relate it to some kind of bigger issue in society and then finally you want to save about five minutes to reread your essay just to check for errors and remember you don’t have time to write out a final draft so it is acceptable to cross things out to scratch out a word that’s misspelled or if you change your mind about the wording you can squeeze it in they’re not grading you on handwriting it doesn’t have to look perfect they know that it’s a timed draft so it can be a little messy it just has to be legible okay so if you have any questions about the appointment I’ve got a pvat whoo yeah so I’m like a weird limbo yeah I’m gonna go grab myself a coffee then go to my appointment but I don’t know if grabbing myself coffees a good idea cuz I get much more anxious with coffee and my appointment is a psychologist appointment as you guys know from my kind of I haven’t really talked about it much and I’m not really going to because this is one of the things where it’s like yes I could show everything on social media but then it makes it ten billion times all stressful and the situation is already extremely stressful as it is so it’s like yeah not worth it but yeah I did like a post on world mental health day saying kind of like certain things and I have had basically like a PTSD diagnosis and other things that have come with that and I this is my first referred appointment up here so I only had to wait for a month for that because it’s beginning of November now and I came off at beginning of October and went to get referred up here because they don’t have to pop down to London for appointments yeah and that’s all on the NHS oh god the NHS is fucking incredible god this has been annoying and significant chat just like my life it’s raining I’m ready to go I look like any don’t know Smurf or something just what am i usual this year’s came once everyone confirmed to me are vegan and all of them and PC out a town down I don’t have time to get coffee sorry but it means I can get some later which is when I thought she needed it so it’s a sign [Music] oh my god don’t of course the downpours stopped of course it has I’m literally drenched as are my packages I do get more yummy Ethiopian food Oh begin medley okay so I’m gonna eat my food and start my work and change cuz I’m drowned rat we just got the cutest stationery package now it’s sunny outside it was literally down pouring so now I guess I’ll start my work basically I’m doing I say and I did a lot of the reading for yesterday and I just need to get back into it because I’m close to an essay plan now I just need to brush it out I’m hoping I can get it done today that would be a big achievement but it will also be amazing so what I need a break or Dysport thank you she don’t like break so I’d rather just bash it out okay so I have done some emails not done in the Uni work so rather than getting down to it and then having to go what I’m gonna do is go to the bank get myself coffee on the way back and then return and then just work the rest of the day these days all my life work because you know Easter time we have two boys [Music] so I went to the bank paid my tax got coffee came back and have managed to procrastinate and it’s just not okay actually I have too much work be procrastinating and as you can’t see how dark is and here like it’s got really gloomy this is what it’s like outside it’s just like gray and there’s no sunlight so welcome to England because I can’t behave I know how to take myself to the library and I just mean the library the college library because I can’t fucking behave so I think I’m gonna leave my phone here or bring my phone with me but leave it in my bag and not even take it out of my bag and just get going because it would really change my life so I got this essay done today so I think that’s what I’m gonna have to do you know so I’ll put my laptop and my charger this time that would be nice wouldn’t it and let me show you what I’ve done so far so this was in general last night I took her basically made a start yesterday on this essay and I’ve just been noting this is one of the really annoying modules where they haven’t given a reading list of any form and the essay questions are really vague so you spent half the time at you’re just trying to find the reading which is fine if it’s for like an extended essay that actually counts towards your course this is literally just a tutorial I say that doesn’t count for anything so it’s like why are you sending me on a fishing expedition when I’m fucking vegan night like anyway so I’ve written this out which is my proposed as a plan and honestly it’s a stupid essay and I’m just going to get writing so I’m just gonna flush these out with what I’ve got colour coded from here as we know this is my a say plan and here’s the colour coded notes and I just developed these key themes of what I think I’m going to include my essay and then started coding notes with those colors and then I’ll just transfer them across to there and now let’s just get writing and then I should be done but by tonight and then I can are you mad just as I say I’m gonna go to the library can you sit down Paul can you see that okay well normally I do quite like it when it rains I want to go to the top of the building but the rooms locked the pen pal it’s not a penthouse we call it me my friends good but else them to make ourselves look busy I think that’s gonna be a storm you know it’s really really rainy so instead of going for library because I’d have to face that now there’s just no point in doing that I’m just gonna start working I’m gonna turn my phone off that’s what I find really helpful if my phone’s still gonna be in the room so I’ll literally you know like slide to power off and then it takes like 10 seconds to be wrong again which is too much you know and then you feel bad when you’re powering it back on so that is a work technique so what I’ll do is I’ll make myself a baraka and then I’m just gonna get going I’m gonna tidy my room a bit that’s my whole PLT Hall it’s hiding my room but because when it’s a mess I can’t concentrate tidy room tidy mind you know I mean so unproductive and it’s making me angry and you know what would solve that being productive but you know what I’m not doing being productive Coffee has made me laugh to put up shit so gonna grab some PCAs some Baraka some ginger I want my old engines so that I become more productive and I’m gonna go to the library because as I said before not behaving like this one discipline today in just some day so you’re super babies [Music] well it’s not my friend my least favorite thing out of all of this that could have napped or something you know have just snapped and yet you spent all that time just sitting here feeling sorry for yourself doing nothing like why do we do that because I know that I spend half my life doing that see if I’m the least talented do I all flat head around that was absolutely nice better now it just like to report I am in fact a genius okay we’re going to the library which plant eat you today would you plan to you I have reported that I am Gertrude today because I’m a mess just generally chaotic disorganized unnecessarily short and I need watering which do you Barry to Luna or Gertrude pilot says she’s and Tallulah because she’s trying to pull herself together but kind of falling apart and so she’s buried because she’s like quite spiky today both in leg hair and attitude so which of you today to see if I go work in here and it’s open and I’m ready to work I’m gonna finish this essay now I progressively did so much I’m actually so I really like so don’t get I have to finish this essay today no matter you focusing yeah I think the main thing with procrastination I mean I think what causes me to many of a craft night its coffee when I don’t need it because it either makes me like hyperactive or you big but it was huge like I could I was like struggling getting to the end of it and that never happens with me and phone such a culprit for that it’s so bad and just need to stop being a brass donating lazy [Music] okay so I’ve got a pretty fully fledged si plan now so I’m just gonna start writing out but I just thought I would do my classic overview of kind of how it’s going from now just cuz last time I know I talked a lot about si plans and how important they are and I just thought I would show you now because now I know exactly what I’m arguing I know what I’m talking about I mean this si plan is 2700 words and that meat may seem like it’s been longer to do the si plan but bearing in mind this has full quotes in this there’s a lot of bullet points that won’t then be included that are basically just from the reading because I don’t know how works your guys you need schools or whatever but you have to do a lot a lot a lot of reading and essay so I’ve done all that reading not all of it this is going to be in the essay but it basically sets out the entire structure so that my essay is not messy I know it’s got all the information that need it needs I basically know what I’m concluding now anyways it might be one or two more like angles I take or something but it’s pretty much completely developed at this stage anyway let me take you through this so this is a pretty factual essay it’s literally just in what ways did the lower so I’ve got the introduction basically have the background on and defining everything in the question which is really importance do so as a few different sources of background information there I’ll have an intro paragraph on the thing we’re talking about and then the origins just to flesh out a bit then the musical characteristics because it’s saying what — how does it affect the musical characteristics and then because it’s about social function I’ll have how were these shaped by social functions so here we get into more of like the essay so I’ve got dramatic forms royal and heroic image imagery themes of serenity and themes of mourning and then literally just a conclusion where I’ll basically answer the question explicitly so it says like to what extent you say the extent and you basically repeat the question which is so important so it is 4:13 now so let’s get going I’m hoping to finish in two hours if I finish by 650 and not be amazing cousin I clear to the gym before making dinner I’m making dinner for my friend too and that would give me a nice relaxing evening which I haven’t had in a while every like 20 minutes earlier and get that in and then totally you felt like a part for the day also I find that my day is always getting better that I started working out which doesn’t translate into how much I do that because I never ever do that but yes I’m going to go and make me and my friend some creamy mushroom pasta because I’m a good friend good that Chelsea Barney so that card I gave her problems I’m just curious better honest I think that portion size is exactly what I just had the biggest pasta it was so delish and yeah I mean I think the thing is because everyone’s always like how do you eat so much and stay like in shape / just generally not put on weight all of that and first things first so my weight fluctuates like everyone else’s but one of the key things is that I know what I can have large quantities off so as well as that the exercise side because obviously it’s all about a calorie deficit like for me priority is portions like I like big amounts of things so I know that if I have like a huge amount of some like really oily curry then that’s gonna be like a lot of calories whereas the things that I make a huge part of my meals like and make everything with two packs of mushrooms instead of one and two packs of broccoli and I know what I can make large quantities of and then I have like the carb part of it as the smaller part as I said before I usually make probably under one serving a pasta that tonight was definitely one half but that’s but yeah and so it generally means that like I know what I can make into the large quantity parts of the meal and then I’m there eating for ages so I feel a lot more satisfied and feel much further for longer so yeah volume foods it’s just the biggest thing in my life no like the biggest contributor to being able to eat loads and stay in shape I don’t know why I’ve suddenly got on this run but I know that everyone always asks me that and it’s like like don’t get me wrong I eat a lot unlike like most of the time I don’t really watch what I’m eating but also the majority of the time I am cooking for myself because like it’s cheaper it means that I can make bigger portions because I mean it’s all work so we like being genuinely serious and yeah so I generally advise that I don’t know where that rank came from but it’s not like I ever planned on doing that or whatever but anyway yes I hope you Tips for Scholarly Writing (Critical Appraisal Paper)

hi everyone I just want to give you a little extra guidance on how to really format and write this final critical appraisal paper in a way that sounds scholarly and hopefully somewhat similar to the articles that you’re actually reading and this is something I would have loved to have more time on in class but as you know this class is very short and intense and I wanted to make sure you got all the content regarding just identifying your articles and appraising them first so this is just giving you some extra ideas on how to format your paper and write it with a scholarly tone so in the introduction this is a very important piece of your paper a lot of you did really well with this already but I just want to give you further guidance on how to structure your introduction um you’re all wait you know I always encourage you to read the scholarly articles that you’ve already looked at either for your critical appraisal paper or for your EBP project and they will also offer good examples of how an introduction is structured in a research article basically the first section you want to start off right away with really strong statements about your problem you want to make those strong claims that talk about just how big of a problem it is you want it to be very compelling and gets the reader interested right away it’s important to use evidence meaning other sources in the literature um you may use a textbook although a lot of times textbook statistics are a bit outdated so I recommend gathering a few additional articles on your topic outside of your critical appraisal article to help you with this section and kind of boost your evidence and you can use systematic reviews they’ll offer great information on your problem or whatever you want to do but I would just strongly suggest getting at least two to three additional articles on your topic for this section and you want to be able to give information about the prevalence of the problem how widespread it is either globally nationally or if you’re focusing on a state issue make sure you give it a test then as with everything you need to always cite sources for all of this information I’m depending on what your problem is you may need to actually explain it or describe like give a definition for your problem if it’s hypertension you know what is the actual systolic range and diastolic range given for that if it’s low birth weight infants what is the exact weight range parameters for that so in some cases you may need to actually explain your problem in more detail and then once you’ve really gotten a good idea of the problem and the prevalence of it then you’ll want to talk about consequences of your problem so what happens when this problem occurs a lot do you have mortality rates that go up do you have other morbidity issues does it cause other health problems major health problems for some of you it may cause financial problems within your hospital especially if we’re looking at the lack of reimbursement because of your issue such as having a fall and then maybe it affects staffing or it even you know in some cases maybe — affects staff satisfaction nursing satisfaction in particular so these are the things you want to be thinking about as you’re really making a strong case about the big problem that is out there in the second section of your introduction so this may be a second paragraph you’re going to want to discuss what’s currently being done about your problem so we call that usual care what’s current Nursing Practice right now so you want to describe that and kind of indicate why that’s not a good way to go why that’s not working and this is where you may have possible statistics to back that up in the group that’s doing CLABSI rates so catheter line associated bloodstream infections and if you’re looking at usual care being the scrub the hub are you able to find statistics on what happens when you use scrub the hub so what are the problems potentially associated with usual care specifically that may not be applicable to all of your problems and all of usual care for each situation but that’s something to be thinking about then you’re going to want to introduce your intervention of interest so this is the I in your pika what you’re going to be exploring in the literature so make sure you’ve introduced that and perhaps you even have a little bit of literature already to give ideas as to why that might actually be a better way to go about things I’m thinking of the group that did cancer pain and they looked at pregabalin as a possible intervention and you may have some just information about the mechanisms of action regarding the different types of medications pre Gavilan versus opioids for specific neuropathic cancer pain and so you may have an explanation pathophysiological II and with the mechanism of action of different drugs to explain why your intervention might be more helpful this is more of just a plausible section because you haven’t done a full review of your article yet in the paper but you want to at least introduce your possible intervention and why this is a possible or a better choice before we talk about tips for writing style I just want to accentuate I didn’t include this in the PowerPoint please please please don’t forget to include a section on or at least a statement or two on how this problem affects nursing for most of you it seems obvious at how it affects nursing but you need to explicitly state that in your paper why this is a significant problem that affects nursing either the problems that nursing that nurses have because of it how nursing is maybe a part of the problem or at least how nursing can be a part of the solution so um as we wrap up the introduction there are specific tips for how to write an introduction besides the formatting that I just gave you one thing that I saw in a lot of rough drafts is that you are using authors names and/or titles of articles in the actual text this is really something to avoid I know that you may have been taught in earlier years that it makes you sound more credible to say according to so-and-so in the article titled set such-and-such and then you give your information actually according to scholarly writing it’s just considered wordy it’s not necessary it takes up space scholarly writing is all about saying what you want to say is few words as possible being substantial but concise so really avoid doing that and just simply state your claims and then cite your sources in parentheses at the end you really don’t need to include that kind of information in the text and most times it’s not even necessary to say in one article bla bla bla bla bla you don’t even need to mention the article explicitly just state the information and then tell us in parentheses where it came from also make sure that every single idea or claim that you state is cited in your text if you did not personally observe this problem you have to cite a source when you’re talking about it so that means that almost every sentence in your introduction needs to have a source cited and please make sure that if a source is cited in your text it is also included in your reference page and vice-versa only only things in your reference everything in your reference page should be also be able to found in your text goes both ways the Pico section should be relatively short but what’s important is developing a transition sentence so making sure that you’re connecting your introduction to your Pico question so that it makes sense so that it flows so so develop some sort of transition sentence that’s connects those two when you’re identifying your Pico make sure you have all four of those components clearly identified I was suggesting in class that you actually put a P in parentheses behind your population and I in parentheses behind your intervention and so forth you do have some creativity and flexibility on how you word your Pico it does not have to be in an actual question although that’s totally fine you may use it as a purpose statement the purpose of this paper is to explore bla bla bla so there are many ways to do this but make sure that it’s very clear and identifiable to the reader there’s not too much to say about search strategies most of you did a really good job on this section the main point is that a reader should be able to replicate your actual searches by following your steps so you do basically just need to say based on your Pico I mean because your search terms should have come from your Pico what database you searched what the search terms were you put in and then how many hits you got or how many articles you were resulted in that search of course you have to repeat that at least two times that’s required in the rubric if you have any limiting parameters that you used either by dates by language by type of journal whatever that may be make sure you include that as well so that the reader can see exactly what you did and be able to follow that if necessary so before you start the official article synopsis make sure you introduce the actual article you’ve chosen this is the only time you will need to actually write out an articles title in the text and formally introduce the article okay so and the Annis in this case you would also need to say what search it came from did it come from cinahl and if you did multiple searches in cinahl what search did it come from so that the readers can see exactly where you got this article how you found it and then you’re going to go through the six elements that are located to your rubric the types of things are going to review again I would use for this synopsis section I would use the critical or the reviewing form that we used for the khadi article way back in week 3 it’s posted in module 3 the blank form that you can use I recommend you filling that out it will give you it will just help guide you in getting all these elements that review form probably has more than these six elements so don’t address them if they’re not in the rubric but you do need to cover these six components you do need to identify what is the purpose the a more objective statement the sample the methods the study design that is simply stating what is the study Dyne is it a randomized controlled trial is it a quasi experimental study is it a correlational study if so what kind is it prospective retrospective you know so maybe you have a descriptive study where it’s more of a survey study so check back in week 3 s PowerPoint and that will have or in your text as well and that will have all the different types of studies that are there for the findings and results this can get a little bit confusing basically what you want to do is you’re going to choose the most relevant results there will probably be a ton you want to pick the most relevant ones usually it’s the ones related to the primary outcomes that were identified earlier in the study usually in the methods section if this is still hard for you to find I recommend going to the abstract because the author’s are putting in the abstract what they think are the most important pieces of their study so I would find those results need to identify what stat test they use to get the results just give them numbers and then you need to summarize what that means what does it mean to have a p-value of such-and-such and a mean of such-and-such so just and that’s just very simple a sentence or two just interpreting what that result means I’m in the limitations section the author should state limitations of the study this would be in the discussion section of your article if they don’t state limitations then you’re gonna need to offer at least a few ideas of possible limitations that you saw in the study and then strengths usually the authors won’t say strengths and so that will be something that you will also need to identify I recommend writing out at least two strengths that you have identified that you think are great things about the study this could be related to sample size it could be related to the type of intervention it can be related to the study design the length of time done for collecting data may be that instruments used there are lots of different things that can make a study strong and so that’s what you would want to briefly mention there in the critical appraisal section of your rubric so as you can see these slides are just going chunk by chunk each session the rubric is kind of a new slide you’re welcome to also use these types of headings as level 1 headings if you’d like a synopsis section an appraisal section if you want to break it down even further like for example under the critical appraisal first level heading you could do a level 2 heading for validity a level 2 for reliability a level 2 for applicability that’s up to you you may not need to do that it’s totally up to you and how lengthy you feel this section is and if it needs to be broken up in the first part of this section you do need to identify the level of evidence this is reflecting back on what the study design is you’ll need to say again what the study design is and because of that study design it is a level what evidence is at level 2 level 3 level 4 level 5 that’s all you need to say for that when you’re talking about problems of validity reliability and applicability again you’re going to want to refer to the second form we used for the pregnancy and alcohol study that’s called the rapid critical appraisal form that is located in module 4 and the blank form on canvas and that’s broken up into those sections and so it asks questions based on validity and reliability and applicability fill that out for your article use those answers to formulate your discussion on whether or not the article is valid and reliable and applicable maybe it’s somewhat valid but not all so these are not black and white answers this is you discussing where their problems related to validity or their strengths related to validity and same with reliability problems strengths problems and strengths related to applicability make sure when you’re talking about each of these categories if you don’t have subheadings for validity reliability and applicability make sure you’re explicitly identifying that you’re talking about those things and you’re talking about whether or not the article is fat or the study is valid and reliable okay so this is all talking about external validity and reliability if you do have an article that actually uses measurement tools or instruments and the Artic and the authors identify the reliability and validity information for those tools please include that information as well but for some of you there’s no measurement tools that would apply to that or you don’t they don’t have a specific measurement tool the last section is your recommendations and these are just some questions to get you thinking about this section so based on your appraisal would you recommend using information from this article basically was it high quality evidence so was it high on the level of evidence pyramid or its chart was it valid according to your appraisal was it a fairly reliable study according to appraisal so that’s all the pieces that go into saying is it high-quality evidence and then not only that but maybe it’s high quality but it’s not really something that could be replicated in real life or in your clinical setting so that’s where you really need to think about your own setting and does this information apply or maybe it needs to be adapted in some way and so how do you recommend adapting what you’ve learned from this article to your own clinical setting in this section you are really writing as the expert in your field of Nursing and you’re really recommending how these researchers can really apply what they’ve done to real-life or maybe not maybe your article is completely inclusive in the results and you just want to talk about that and maybe give further recommendations for research in this topic or exploring a new intervention and this is again really up to you and really where you’re displaying your critical thinking and and acting as an expert in your field there is no conclusion section per se in the rubric but it may be necessary to write a brief conclusion paragraph after recommendations to summarize everything that you’ve written about your article and what you recommend going forward it’s kind of up to you and your writing style but that may be something that would be helpful for you so this is my last bit about tips for writing style on the second half of your critical appraisal paper it is in the rubric but I would just want to accentuate please please please do not use direct quotes direct quotes should not be used at all throughout the entire article actually or throughout your entire paper basically what that does when you use direct quotes is it takes away your own credibility it basically shows that you are not able to take the information that you’ve read and and interpret it in your own way so that is what I want to be able to see is that you can summarize information you can synthesize it you can pull information from different sources and come up with conclusions and so that needs to be done in your own words of
